How Masahiro Motoki’s ’Zero-Day Proposal’ to Yayako Uchida Changed Japanese Wedding Norms
Masahiro Motoki, 60, Reveals Unconventional Love Story: A Proposal Without Dating

Japanese actor Masahiro Motoki celebrated his 60th birthday by sharing the extraordinary tale of his marriage to Yayako Uchida. His revelation of proposing without any prior dating has reignited public interest in their unique love story.
Yahoo Japan reported on the 8th that Motoki's interview in the upcoming issue of 'Bungei Shunju' magazine, set to release on the 9th, delves into his unconventional marriage. The actor also discusses his relationships with his in-laws: singer Yuya Uchida and actress Kirin Kiki.
Born in 1966, Motoki recently marked his 60th birthday. The second son of a 15-generation farming family from Saitama Prefecture, he entered showbiz at 14 with the drama '2nd Year B Class Teacher Senpachi.' At 16, he rose to fame as a member of the idol group Shibugakitai before transitioning into acting, eventually becoming one of Japan's most respected performers.
In the interview, Motoki recounts his path to marriage. At 29, while riding high on his acting career, he tied the knot with 19-year-old Yayako Uchida. Their decade-long age gap and Motoki's decision to become a live-in son-in-law by adopting the Uchida family name sparked a media frenzy. Most notably, his proposal before they had even dated remains a topic of fascination.
The couple's fateful encounter occurred during the production of 'Dioxin from Fish!!,' a film written by and starring Yayako's father, Yuya Uchida. Motoki first met Yayako at a cast and crew dinner.
Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Motoki shares, "I met Yayako at that dinner. She was alone, seemingly abandoned by her father during his annual visit, eating away from the crowd. I approached her and asked, 'Would you like something to drink?'"
Yayako, who had spent much of her childhood apart from her father, was keeping to herself at the gathering. Motoki's gesture sparked a connection, which they nurtured through letter exchanges.
At the time, Yayako was a high school student studying in Switzerland. Despite the distance between the Japan-based actor and the overseas student, they shared their thoughts through correspondence. Approximately two years after their initial meeting, Motoki surprised Yayako with an unexpected proposal.
Motoki's proposal was remarkably forward-thinking. He told her, "I can picture you with gray hair, and I know I'll find you just as lovely then. Even if it's not now, when marriage becomes a consideration in your future, I hope you'll include me as an option." Rather than pushing for an immediate commitment, he was asking to be considered when the time was right.
Remarkably, this proposal came without any period of dating - a "zero-day dating proposal," as it were. Yayako was understandably taken aback. Motoki reveals that he proposed when Yayako was 17, and they married when she turned 19.
Looking back, Motoki acknowledges, "This would likely face criticism if it happened today." Their marriage announcement stirred considerable public interest due to their age gap, Yayako's youth, and the lack of a dating period. The fact that Motoki became a live-in son-in-law further fueled the intrigue.
Motoki's mother-in-law, Kirin Kiki, played a role in shaping their marital arrangement. At her request, Motoki agreed to take on the Uchida family name as a live-in son-in-law. While their unconventional union raised eyebrows in Japan's entertainment circles, the couple has since built a lasting marriage.
As Motoki celebrates his 60th birthday, his candid recollection of their extraordinary love story has rekindled public fascination with their enduring relationship.
