NEW YONSEI KOREAN Listening and Reading 1-1 (English)
 
Introduction

1 The book is the textbook for beginners of Korean language, to be used along with ‘Yonsei Korean 1 Vocabulary and Grammar’ and ‘Yonsei Korean 1 speaking and writing’.

2 The book is intended to develop the ability to understand written and spoken Korean language which is appropriate to a beginner’s level of study.

3 There are 20 units in the book. Each unit consists of 2 sections. One review section is added after every 2 units. You will find Hangul(Korean Alphabet) on the beginning pages of the book and the introduction of Korean culture is included in every 2 units. You can work through 50 sections in total. Each one is organised as a 50 minute lesson.

4 Each section of the book is written in the following 5 phases: ‘Let’s prepare’, ‘Let’s read (Let’s listen)’, ‘Let’s listen (Let’s read)’, ‘Let’s repeat’, and ‘Let’s summarize’. In every section of the book, listening and reading activities are included, however the presenting order of these two activities depends on the contents and nature of each unit.

5 The title of each unit corresponds to ‘Yonsei Korean 1 Vocabulary and Grammar’, which may not be the case for the sections. Each section is titled according to the contents. The QR code next to each title helps an easy access to the audio contents.

6 The lesson objective of each section puts an emphasis on comprehension abilities, such as ‘The students will be able to undrestand~’, or ‘The students will be able to undrestand about ~’.

7 ‘Let’s prepare’ helps the learners to prepare before working on the reading and
listening activities. It covers the essential vocabulary for the section. To assist learners to better understand the vocabulary, each word is presented in sentences or in contexts.
8 ‘Let's read’ focuses on improving reading comprehension skills in everyday life. The main reading materials comprise of memos, instructions, and notices. 

9 ‘Let’s listen’ concentrates on spoken language, aiming to develop communication skills in real life. Listening materials are presented step by step through 4 tasks: starting from a sentence to a dialogue, then conversations; from short to long; from easy to difficult. For the 3rd and 4th tasks, the 2nd stage of each task is a dictation, so that the contents can be accurately grasped. Therefore, for these two tasks, it is necessary for the instructor to guide the students not to take a look at the second stage questions while working on the first stage questions.

10 ‘Let’s repeat’ is for pronunciation practices. It selects a target pronunciation from the previous reading and listening materials, which shows phonological changes or high error rates in pronunciation. The sentence containing this target pronunciation and two sample words are presented.

11 ‘Let’s summarize’ allows the learners to check their work by themselves and
strengthen their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in an integral way.

12 The ‘Review’ section consists of two parts, reading and listening. It helps the learners to utilize the contents, vocabulary and grammar from the two previous units. Each part focuses on one skill(reading or listening) and links to the other skill, to lead the learners into integrated study.

13 ‘Culture’ is added at the end of each review section. It contains cultural text and illustrations. It consists mainly of information culture contents among others, which are appropriate to the characteristics of a comprehension textbook.

14 The book begins with the ‘Hangul(Korean Alphabet)’ part so that learners can read the letters, words and sentences, and also can distinguish the phonemes while listening.

15 The ‘Appendix’ section contains answer keys and vocabulary index. And the translations for the reading materials, the transcripts and translations of listening materials are in the Supplement book.
