CéCi and Lee Dong Hae first collaborated for a cosmetics photo shoot in 2006. He had just debuted and become the face of the then-trending ggotminam (beautiful boy) era. Four Super Junior members and Yoona from Girls’ Generation participated in the shoot as well, but everyone went crazy over a man being front and center in a lipstick shoot. The second project happened in September 2012 for a solo photo shoot—a rare event for a member of an idol group. I remember being in awe, seeing how natural he looked in each shot and thinking, “Oh, he has the potential to become a great actor.” The third time, in 2013, was in Bangkok for the CéCi Thailand launch. The group had just wrapped up an SM Town show the day before, and Dong Hae hung back in Bangkok for the CéCi cover shoot. While he was there, he also dazzled tens of thousands of Thai fans on stage for the magazine launch event at the Siam Paragon shopping mall. Even as his flight boarding time was approaching, I found myself thinking, “Wow, he is so sincere with his fans,” as I watched him ask his manager for “just a little more time, just a little more” to spend with his cheering fans.
K-pop has a strong foothold worldwide, but it is still uncommon for members of idol groups to be highlighted individually. CéCi planned a feature solo shoot to capture Lee Dong Hae at his beautiful days. Despite COVID-19 lockdown restrictions putting a stop to all in-person fan meetings and events, Dong Hae was happy to find new ways to stay in touch with his fanbase. Now, we appease all the fans who have been begging for CéCi to release the photos. I hope the stills and articles become another meaningful record by which Lee Dong Hae will be remembered for a long time to come.
